So Thankful for the Loyola Park Fall Show

After School Program

Today in rehearsal it struck me that with Turkey Day just around the corner, we BOM folk have so much to be thankful for!

Personally, I’m very thankful to be part of the Loyola Park fall show. I’m thankful that the authors from the after school program have provided us with such rich stories to sink our teeth into. I’m thankful that everyone in the cast gets to play a variety of roles and have a blast while doing so. Most of all, I’m thankful to be part of an organization that empowers young writers to put pen to paper and let their imaginations flow out.

We’re all feeling pumped for Monday’s show at Loyola Park! The stage will be filled with a little bit of song and dance, lots of creativity, and tons and tons of gratitude:)

Loyola Park Fall Show Kick Off!

School Shows After School Program

A wave of high energy took us from our first school show right into rehearsals for the second one of the year. This time we’re showcasing the work of the brilliant young authors in the Loyola Park After School Program. We are so impressed by the variety of stories and the incredibly imaginative voice of each author. Because the Loyola Park students have written stories from a range of genres, this is sure to be a fun and dynamic show. With topics from science to zombies to dating, we’re getting ready for one wild adventure after the other!

Check out how much fun we had reading and adapting stories at our first rehearsal.

Year 9 of the Loyola Park After-School Program!

Posted by Rachel on September 9, 2013

After School Program

Greetings, Chicago students and parents!

Are you back in your school groove? We are!

The Loyola Park After-School Program makes its glorious return next Monday, September 16th! As Arts Partners at Loyola Park, we’ve been offering this free program for 7-13-year-olds since 2004! This program is old enough to be in the Gold Group.

If you don’t already know, this program is all about creative writing and drama. We explore all kinds of writing: stories, poems, plays, graphic novels, and more! We do a lot of acting, play a lot of games, and build one generous, supportive community. It’s kind of like summer camp if summer camp came with journals and Monkey Bucks rewards and happened during the school year.

Each fall and winter, professional actors adapt our students’ writing and perform it at the park. Then, in the spring, our students adapt and perform their own work in a Monkey-style show!

The program lasts all year, and you can sign up for our Fall session now by visiting the park or by calling Loyola Park Supervisor Mary Hopkins at 773-262-8605.

It’s almost TLC showtime!

After School Program

How the time flies!  After a quick and intense four-day rehearsal process, the inaugural Teaching Lab Collaborations show is being performed tomorrow morning at the Logan Center in Hyde Park, at the crack of 9am!  The whole Monkeys cast was amazingly impressed with the stories from the students at TLC… the humor (the comedic rule of three, for instance), variety of style (horror, fantasy, mystery) and imagination (too many examples to mention) in these stories are all fantastic, not to mention their impressive use of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions (our audience can look forward to hearing about a “newfangled motorcycle” and “eyes that pierce your heart.”)

Join us in Hyde Park tomorrow morning, everyone!

After School Program

We’re so excited to be starting work on the end-of-the-year show for Barrel of Monkey’s brand new after-school program in conjunction with Teaching Lab Collaborations at the Logan Center in Hyde Park.  Today’s rehearsal was filled with feuding French mimes, slapstick jokes on the street, a mega wrestling match, a spy with a sweet tooth, and (as you’ll see in the video clip bellow) space horses, in space.  What will tomorrow bring?!
