That's Weird Grandma
TWG Weekly Update
Barrel of Monkeys Company Member Laura McKenzie will be featured in “That’s Weird, Grandma” this week!
She will bring two of the many songs she has written for Barrel of Monkeys:
UNTITLED (SAD MICROWAVE-LM SONG)
Story by Rene, Avondale Logandale Elementary School
Once upon a time there was a very sad microwave oven because they did not use it to heat up food. It always cried every night because they did not use it and it wanted to leave from the house and leave to other things and following day they were going to use for the first time but it (the microwave) wasn’t there and they looked for it and called the police and put papers (flyers) saying looking for a microwave oven and at last/finally they found it in a house.
And one based on a series of students’ stories:
GOTTA STOP THE FIGHTING
By Dejah K., Mister BL One T., Romesha D., Darryl S., Devin G., Capri B., 3rd Grade, Henderson
Dejah K.
I believe that who ever sales guns should not do it
1. Because…they could kill somebody
2. Because…God do not like it
3. Because…You can get killed by killing somebody family
Mister B.L. One T.
I believe that people should stop fighting!
My first reason is because someone could get hurt real bad.
My second reason is because people can be angry and they can die.
My third reason is it would be a gooder place to live.
In conclusion, I believe that people should stop fighting.
Romesha D.
I believe people should stop shooting.
First because people will die.
Second because on Halloween they is going to shoot at the wrong person.
My third reason is they
Darryl S.
I believe I should get to be by myself all the time.
My first reason is so that I won’t get killed or shot at a young age living by myself.
Devin G.
I believe people need to stop fighting.
My first reason is my people get hurt.
And my second reason is people is going to cry.
And my third reason is they is going to they feeling get hurt.
And that is why I believe people need to stop fighting.
Capri B.
I believe that men need to stop shooting at ten year old boys.
First, because they will die and they mom will cry and they dad will cry.
Second, because I like talking to my brother and my cousins who are ten year old boys and I would miss them and I care about them.
Third because people should not shoot anyone because we’re all brothers and sisters and family.
That is why I believe that men need to stop shooting ten year old boys.

School Shows
Rehearsal for the Dewey show kicked off this week, and man oh man is it going to be a fun show. With a small, yet powerful cast, and director Marika Mashburn at the helm; many a laughs have been had and a great show has developed in the process. I had the privilege of being on the Dewey teaching team, and working with these amazing 3rd, 4th and 5th graders; and as always, it brings a smile to my face to see how their stories come alive on stage. From going back in time to save Halloween, hiring a hard working bear name Nick to join the Monkeys, to dodging piranhas and chain saws to win a bike race against the gods…. the six weeks at the Dewey School of Excellence shows without question, that every idea is indeed a good idea. Check out some of the pics from rehearsal, and stay tuned for more blogs on the Dewey School Show 2014! Yeah!!

School Shows
Once upon a Monday early, while we traveled, we thought surely
The students of Poe wrote such awesome characters to explore
While we pondered their inspiration for their stories’ exclamation
As of someone’s jubilation, bubbling out a mental drawer
“They’re just brilliant!” we cried out, “They’ve got creativity galore—
All of this and so much more.”
Ah, distinctly we recall, it was in the chilly spring, not fall
Each story brought its Raven magic upon the stage floor:
Ms. Wilkins, Beyonce, Draco Malfoy, dragons, cheesecakes, zombies now destroyed,
Superheroes, oh what joy—joy for their creative repertoire
“Kids rule the world” echoed loudly and was a theme for sure,
All of this and so much more…
Thank you to the amazing Ravens at Poe Elementary Classical School. It was our first time working with you and we can’t wait to do it again!

That's Weird Grandma
Michael Spatafora, longtime Barrel of Monkeys Company Member, joins us to perform two of his classic arrangements of our students’ stories.
The Day I Pooped In The Bathtub by: Del S., Loyola Park After School Program
composed by Mike Spatafora
I was three or four and I was taking a bath and my mom was there. I was playing with a ship, suddenly a fart, push a feeling a smell, I pooted or pooped, I yelled with happiness liked the brown thing it was funny but not to my mom She pulled me out of the tub and picked the poo with a towel, up and to the toilet it went.

First Kiss by Joshua I., 3rd Grade, Harold Washington Elementary
composed by Mike Spatafora
In the summer time last year just about before the school year was over there was this girl named Diana [note from the typist: all i’s in ‘Diana’ written with a heart as the dot on the i] that I sorta had a crush on she smelled like fresh fruit or flowers she was like a dream come true so total hot that she could almost hypnotize me to do or give her something. I had the most scariest gang of rough friends ever even the 8th graders were horrified of us we were vicious like a swarm of wild sharks. Diana had the most prettiest friends and all of my friends go out with them but I got beauty and brains. One day something changed completely after we had art and washed our hands Diana walk in and turn off the lights and frenched me WOW tolito! Man she could kiss so could I ?
Say WOW Tolito! For discounted tickets.
