School Shows

Hello my friends,

You know one of the best things about doing a school show, is the break neck speed in which it all comes together. And after hours and hours of hard work…. We got ourselves a show!!! That’s right, New Sullivan goes down tomorrow. And if that isn’t enough, it will be the world premier of our brand new closing song; written by our very own Ricky Harris. What! What!! It’s too much I tell ya. But while ya waiting for tomorrow to come, check out some of the pictures from rehearsal.

New Sullivan Baby

School Shows

Rehearsal for the first school show of the year is underway, and what a show it will be. After only two days of adapting, our fearless cast have created some pretty amazing plays. A wacky tale about a villian and a robber; a charming yarn about a flying horse and a little girl; and a touching story about a soilder who loses her best friend in battle. (Aw man, this almost brought me to tears!)

Let’s hear it for two of our newest Monkeys: Nancy and Ryan. Yeah!!

But for all the talent that goes into the adapting process, nothing would be possible without the kids. The students of New Sullivan penned some amazing stories. Insightful, funny, personal, and without a doubt thought provoking. If you wonder why I think I have the coolest job in the world, now you know baby!!!!

The big show goes down next week my friends, and we all hope to see you there. Enjoy the rest of the week and until we meet again…. Namaste!!!

School Shows

Barrel of Monkeys has had an amazing week!  We added 13 new ensemble members, received an award for Excellence in Children’s Theatre from the Illinois Theatre Association, and had a stellar show and audience last night! Want to help this week get EVEN BETTER?  You can!  Just by voting online for Barrel of Monkeys’ In-School Programming through Chicago Sun-Times Sun Shine Project!  Each year, the philanthropic arm of the Chicago Sun-Times asks for the community’s input regarding where their funds should go.  If you vote and/or leave a comment on our Sun Shine Project page, it will be considered as the Charity Trust decides what worthy organizations receive a grant.  You must vote THIS WEEK because voting ends on Sunday!

Here’s how you vote!

Visit www.chicagosunshineproject.com or click here.
If you haven’t ever logged into the site, it will ask you to create a user name and password (or you can use facebook to sign in).
Go to the Youth Art and Culture section, or just search for Barrel of Monkeys.
Either way, you are looking for Barrel of Monkeys’ In-School Programs!
Hit the thumbs up button on the left hand side of the page to vote for us, and leave a comment if you’d like!

Just by following these simple steps, you can help children like these continue to benefit from our programming!

There have been some inspiring comments on the page, including one from Kathleen O’Donoghue:

This is an amazing program. I have attended school shows and public performances and in addition to the measurable impact on the students, the intangible benefits are astonishing. I witnessed the pride in the student authors and their peers, the excitement in the audience when the stories are interpreted by the ensemble and to me, perhaps most importantly, the obvious development of the valuing of storytelling. The ability to tell our own stories encourages community, reduces the incidence of objectification of the “other” and encourages us all to see that we are more similar than different. This is the most dynamic program involved in public education today.

We are doing well (not excellent) in the voting, so anything you can do to help get family and friends to vote would be much appreciated!  Our next benchmark goal is 150 votes - can you help us get there?  You’ll help our award-winning theatre driven by the imaginations of children continue!

School Shows

For all of you who missed the Dixon School show this morning, let me just tell you that it was INCREDIBLE! I was so excited to see all of the students I worked with as well as meet all of the other talented kids at Dixon!

I’m a little bummed that the show is over….but I won’t be sad for long, because I know you’ll keep writing those amazing stories and I hope the next time I see all of you that those journals are full of new and creative things to share! I had a blast working on this show, and I had an even better time seeing all of your wonderful faces in the audience.

Till next time! Kaitlen

School Shows

OH MY GOSH I CAN’T SLEEP AND I’M UP WAY PAST MY BEDTIME BECAUSE I’M SO STINKIN’ EXCITED ABOUT THE DIXON SHOW TOMORROW MORNING!!!!

My apologies for that…but seriously, I’m really, really pumped about the awesome show we have to perform for the delightful Dixon kids. Tonight—man oh man was rehearsal rockin’ tonight! We did an action-packed run through of YOUR show from top to bottom and worked out all of our kinks.

As we’ve gone through this week of rehearsal, I consider myself a much more educated individual. Before the Dixon show, I had no idea what the Swag was, didn’t know you could do the Surf without an ocean, and I thought a Dougie was slang for one of the best 90’s cartoons of all time. But NOW…well, let’s just say that girl up on stage who’s gettin’ those dance moves on—yeah, that’s me. Or, if I could use some more training, just come find me after the show. I like to think of myself as a professional non-dancer who needs a helping hand now and then.

But long story short—thanks to YOU and the incredible work you wrote, I’ve now learned four new dances AND a handful of original songs to add to my repertoire. So, thanks, Dixon students. This show has been a blast to work on, and I can’t wait to see you, and for you to see your stories onstage in….ten hours and twenty minutes! Better start counting sheep…1…2…3….4…llama…5…6…7….
