School Shows
Of course in all Barrel of Monkeys shows, the true stars are the students who wrote the amazing stories…but as we are beginning to see in this school show, there are two definite stars.
Hello Kitty

According to Wikipedia, Hello Kitty is “a fictional character produced by the Japanese company Sanrio. She is portrayed as a female white Japanese bobtail cat with a red bow.” She is referenced quite a bit by the girls of Cather in several stories.
Aaaaand this lady.

The other star of our show is turning out to be Grandma and/or older ladies in general. They do it all…steal, cook, get stuck in shoe houses, get jobs..
Until the next blog entry, this is Emjoy Gavino, signing off.

If you weren’t already excited about Monkey-o-kee 2013 (and why wouldn’t you be? It’s a night full of karaoke, food, drinks, and WORLD SAVING!!) , here’s reason to get even MORE excited.
While everyone who attends Monkey-o-kee has the opportunity to sing their lungs out, or watch others, some of us Monkeys get gussied up in ridiculous get-ups, create a concept around a song and perform in front of a large group of people at Monkey-o-kee, and get sponsored by friends and family to do so. The money these Monkeys raise to get sponsored goes towards our work in Chicago Public Schools.
Here is who we’ve got this year:
Zoe Schwartz and Nick Hart are combining a song by this lady
inspired by this guy
.
You can sponsor Zoe and Nick to see how!
Rachel Wilson, Jen Johnson, Kassi Bleifuss and Joe Schupbach are gonna let a certain person take the wheel, via a Carrie Underwood classic!
Sponsor them if you feel good about letting them take over the mic with their vocal talents!
Ricky Harris is proud to present a song by his favorite person to portray in celebrity cameos in school performances. Sponsor him, and we promise you’ll do this:

And you will have the opportunity to sponsor the ever-delightful Laura McKenzie who will be making a few guest appearances throughout the evening! This is how people already feel about that:

You can sponsor any or all of these folks online right now, as well as buy your tickets for Monkey-o-kee! Don’t forget that buying a ticket AND sponsoring these Monkeys to sing these songs helps us keep doing our work in Chicago Public Schools. Save the world, one karaoke song at a time! See you on February 10!

That's Weird Grandma
TWG Weekly Update
In tonight’s production of That’s Weird, Grandma we add two stories that exhibit the high stakes of asking parents for things.

What happens when a favorite telenovela stops a kid from going to the park?
Untitled Dialogue
Por Brandon, Jenny & Brisa, Lorca
Escenario: Una casa
Personajes: Papa, Mama, Hijo
H- Papa, puedo ir al parque?
P- (cansado) No estoy muy cansado (bosteza)
H- Por que no? Por favor!
P- Te dije que no. Que no! Bueno, que no! (Enojado) Pide a tu madre que te lleve. Me voy a acostar.
(La mama esta sentada en la sala)
H- Me puedes llevar al parque por favor?
M: No estoy viendo mi telenovela. (El sacerdote casa a Pancho Lopez con el fantasma de Laura) FIN
Translation:
Setting: A house
Characters: Dad, Mom, Son
Son: Dad, can I go to the park?
Dad: (tired) No I am very tired (yawns)
Son: Why not? Please!
Dad: I told you no. No! I said no! (angry) Go ask your mother to take you. I’m going to
lay down.
(Mom is sitting in the living room)
Son: Can you take me to the park, please?
Mom: No I’m watching my soap opera. (The priest weds Pancho Lopez to the ghost of Laura)
The End

what happens when the lottery comes between a father and son?
Money to Blow by Simeon C., Dewey Academy
One day my dad won the lottery. He won 1,000,000,000. He gave me 100 dollars. out of 1,000,000,000. I said “You are a cheapskate”.
Say “Pancho Lopez” to Kassi at the box office to get $2 off your ticket price!

School Shows
KB: Sarah! We just finished the LEARN Campbell Winter show! This was your very first school show as a new Monkey. How was it?
SA: It was incredible! I already can’t wait to work on another one!
KB: How would you describe performing in a school show, like LEARN Campbell, for those folks out there who have never experienced a BOM school show?
SA: It’s very energetic! You have all these kids’ eyes on you as you’re telling their stories and they are laughing and clapping and dancing along, and the energy of them as an audience really feeds back into your performance.
KB: What one word best describes your experience working on the show?
SA: Teamwork. I know it might sound cliche, but this is the only show I’ve ever worked on in which the ensemble members were so supportive, creative and willing to work together.
KB: Was there something that surprised you while rehearsing for the show?
SA: I was surprised at how quickly the process passes. When you only have three hours a night for six nights to put on an hour + long show, it can seem like there is a huge time crunch. But the way that everyone worked together in the rehearsal room was stunning.
KB: Is there anything you’d like to say to the amazing student authors at LEARN Campbell who wrote all the stories?
SA: THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It takes a lot of courage to write stories, especially ones that are true, so you have all done a phenomenal job!
